ZINVO's Favorite Destinations: Geneva

For our latest edition of ZINVO's Favorite Destination series, we actually don't head anywhere. Instead, we invite you to check out our home city of Geneva! Read on to discover Switzerland's most famous city.

It can easily be said that Geneva, Switzerland, is the most international city in the world. It has been that way for over one hundred years, with the establishment of international institutions, like the International Telecommunications Union (ITU) in 1868, and the Universal Postal Union (UPU) in 1874. Since then, 33 international organizations have housed their headquarters in Geneva. Organizations like the United Nations (UN), the World Trade Organization (WTO), and the central bank of all the world’s central banks: the Bank of International Settlements (BIS).

Banking is also a tremendously large industry in Geneva. And of course, one cannot mention Geneva and Switzerland without mentioning that it is the center of fine watchmaking. The world’s most renowned and largest luxury watch companies line Lake Geneva, and so do many other establishments worth visiting.

Lake Geneva

Lake Geneva, or Lac Léman as locals refer to it, is one the largest lakes in Western Europe and it's shared between Switzerland and France. It is in a shape of a crescent with the horns pointing south and it's the centerpiece of Geneva. While springtime is still quite cold around the lake, the weather is perfect in the summer, so start planning now for your Swiss escape!

There's plenty to do in Lake Geneva, but one must start with the largest landmark and main event: the Jet d'Eau, or Water-Jet. This technological marvel was remarkably first installed in 1886, but in a different location as a release valve for a hydraulic power network at the time. It was moved to its current location to commemorate the 600th anniversary of the Swiss Federation in 1891. We'd recommend getting on a boat and touring the lake for an upclose view of the fountain—just like we did with our ZINVO Blade Silver.

The surrounding areas around Geneva's famous lake is a great place to people watch. As one of the richest cities in the world, there's no shortage of beautiful things on show. Something that always catches our eye is the epic display of ultra expensive sportscars and supercars driving around in the city, particularly in the summertime.

A short walk away from the Jet d’Eau is the L’horloge Fleurie, or Flower Clock, which was created in 1955 to commemorate the history of fine watchmaking and their dedication to nature. It's a nice stop to enjoy the surrounding beauty and charm of Geneva, especially on the way to Old Town.

Old Town

Geneva's Old Town is a fun-filled maze of cafés, restaurants, and museums huddled in old European architecture and masonry. St. Peter’s Cathedral is the most famous destination in Old Town, because of its important role in Swiss history. For example, John Calvin preached Protestantism there in the 16th century, and now it is the tallest structure in Old Town. While in Old Town, do not forget to visit Maison Tavel—which is the oldest house that was built in Geneva in the 12th century. The city bought the house in 1963 and redesigned it into the Museum of History of Geneva.

Geneva is home to over 30 museums and galleries, many of them are lining Lake Geneva, and many of them are free to enter. Museums like the Museum of the History of Science and the Natural History Museum educate guests about the constant evolution of humanity through science, which came from Human observations and study of the natural world; it is no wonder that CERN is headquartered in Geneva.

Geneva is an extraordinary place to visit. The people are welcoming and speak multiple languages. The food is fantastic (hello cheese and chocolate), and the coffee is even better. Whether your interest is in human libertarian thought, international peace, banking, or watchmaking, then Geneva is the destination for you.
