ZINVO's Favorite Destinations: Miami
Grab your beach gear and ZINVO watches and join us as we head to one of the country's most playful cities, Miami!
Known for its hot and humid climate, beautiful beaches and luxurious living, the city of Miami is a top destination for international and domestic tourists. It's named after the Miami River, which originates in the Everglades and drains out into the Atlantic Ocean.
Miami is the only major city in the US founded by a woman, Julia Tuttle. "Mother Miami", as she's now known, was a citrus grower from a wealthy Cleveland family. When the Great Freeze of 1894-1895 struck, Miami’s crops were the only ones saved from the disaster. With only a population of 300, Julia Tuttle convinced Henry Flagler (a railway mogul) to extend his Florida Railway system to the area. This, in turn, made Miami officially incorporate in 1896, and it has grown exponentially into the globally recognized city we see today.
Miami’s Skyline is ranked third in the US, right behind New York and Chicago. This is the result of a construction boom that started in 2001, where over 50 skyscrapers soared over 400 feet. Once the housing crisis of 2008 arrived, the building boom did indeed subsided, yet left behind an impressive skyline nonetheless as seen here behind the trio of ZINVO Blades: the Venom, the Rose Gold, and the Nemesis.
While downtown, Freedom Tower is a great place to visit. Built in 1925, it is Miami’s historical landmark. Originally used as the headquarters for the Miami News newspaper, today it is serving the community as a museum and cultural center celebrating local artists and history.
South Beach or SoBE is home to hundreds of nightclubs, restaurants, and hotels. It was also the backdrop to Miami Vice, Scarface and the Cocaine Cowboys documentaries. After Hurricane Andrew, architect William Lane donated his time and created many lifeguard towers that are part of the revival of South Beach. One great example is the Stars and Stripes Lifeguard Tower as pictured here along with the ZINVO Blade Nemesis.
Once you arrive at South Beach head to the Sunset Lounge in the Mondrian Hotel where the indoor/outdoor lounge is the perfect setting to watch the sunset right before it’s time to party. For a great night out, look no further than Liv at the Fontainebleau Miami Beach Hotel where some of the best DJs in the industry play for slews of celebs and regular folk alike. A little further south is Baoli, featuring a French-Mediterranean theme that surely satisfy even the most well-travelled amongst us. Offering excellent cuisine, great views, and top tunes, Baoli will be a night to remember.
South Pointe Park Pier
Established in 2014, this brand new 450-foot pier is constructed of concrete and aluminum, and finished with wood that is said to be resistant to insects. A big plus in humid Miami. It's a great place to enjoy the Miami skyline, admire the city's yachts, take a stroll, or even partake in some fishing.
A rich, diverse, and vibrant city, Miami is definitely a top destination in the US. With a population that loves to spend money, look good, and enjoy every moment, Miami is always a good time.
