Rolls-Royce is one of the oldest and most recognizable car manufacturers in the world. They are mostly famous for being the car of the ultra-rich and elite, but recently, their appeal is spanning across different types of people including a younger demographic. But of course, this still only includes the moneyed class.
The first Rolls-Royce “Ghost” surfaced in 1906, and was named the “Silver Ghost.” It is a far cry from today’s Ghost, which is based on the chassis of the BMW 7-series and even shares 20% of the same components.
When the Rolls-Royce bespoke team redesigned the Ghost, they were targeting a different segment of the market. For example, the Rolls-Royce Phantom is priced at $400,000, while the Rolls-Royce Ghost is priced at around $200,000. That may be a price that is out of reach for most, yet, a 50% price difference is a step in the right direction. More affordable luxury is always appreciated.
The exterior of the Rolls-Royce Ghost screams prestige and class. Its iconic “Spirit of Ecstasy” or “Flying Lady” emblem on the hood is controlled from the inside of the car to be hidden or visible through a push of a button. The famous grill bearing the Rolls-Royce insignia is nestled nicely between the LED headlights.
From the side, the lines of the vehicle are seductively sculpted, drawing attention to the Ghost’s aerodynamic design. The doors open outwards to allow easier access to the back seat, a feature that has always been part of the Rolls-Royce design and ideal when being chauffeured around. One glance at the Rolls-Royce Ghost and it's not hard to imagine that 60 hands put that ultra-luxurious vehicle together.
The Rolls-Royce Ghost boasts some of the best paint techniques in the business. Five coats of paint are applied—which takes seven days—followed by hours of painstaking polishing, thus resulting in that beautiful Rolls-Royce shine.
The Rolls-Royce Ghost is a heavy car. With a curb weight about 5500 lbs., it’s going to need a very powerful engine to get it moving. As a result, BMW equipped the Ghost with a modified version of the BMW N74. A 6.6 liter twin-turbo V12 engine that produces 563 horsepower and 605 lbs-ft of torque.
This engine can bring the Ghost from 0-60 mph in an impressive 4.7 seconds. Not bad for an ultra-luxury car focused on comfort and not speed. However, top speed is electronically capped at 155 mph. And frankly, with looks like these, top speed is irrelevant. Like other Rolls-Royce models, the power of the engine distributes to the tires through the ZF 8-speed automatic transmission.
With 30 pairs of hands taking part in creating the vehicle, the interior of the Ghost is by far the best in its class. From hand-stitched leatherwork to well-polished veneer to BMW iDrive infotainment system, the Rolls-Royce Ghost is an absolute pleasure to be in.
The innovative engineering of the driving experience provides feedback through sensors, thus informing the driver of what is currently happening and what can be expected around the corner. Rolls-Royce proudly says, "This is the car that predicts the future… this is the car that sees at night".
Although Rolls-Royce designs its cars to have the owner driven around, the Ghost has been intended to accommodate both tastes. Having such a powerful engine and transmission, combined with the high-tech driving experience, the Ghost is for owners that like the freedom of driving themselves.
